Overview

Columbus has made a habit of running from what scares him. Tallahassee doesn’t have fears. If he did, he’d kick their ever-living ass. In a world overrun by zombies, these two are perfectly evolved survivors. But now, they’re about to stare down the most terrifying prospect of all: each other.

Viewing Notes

Even as early as 2009 it was starting to feel like the zombie genre was played out, but ZOMBIELAND manages to still feel fresh even two years later.

The plot is nothing new: zombies have destroyed the world. But, making Columbus’ rules a focus play up the conventions that so many other films take for granted and provides a solid foundation for the rest of the film.

The cast is great and I have no complaints there; limiting the characters really makes it feel intimate and allows the actors some breathing room. I’d really love to see Harrelson and Eisenberg in a buddy film together again, even if it’s not a sequel to this one.

Even if ZOMBIELAND doesn’t provide many scares, it blends tragedy, wit, comedy, and conventions of the genre to produce a standout zombie film and a great way to introduce a newcomer to the genre.
