Viewing Notes

Growing up in a goodly Christian home, I was never allowed to see movies that were rated higher than PG until I was 16, at which point CHILD’S PLAY was not at the top of my list because I was full on into sci-fi and girls, which seemed to be mutually exclusive.

As a kid, I can remember the trailers scaring me and then with later editions, laughing with the camp that seemed to become more prevalent. So, watching this for the first time, I was suprised by how not campy it was and in fact, how little real humor there is. I applaud that as it’s almost too easy to go that route. I was also surprised by how it still tweaks a bit of the fear of the little kid that’s buried deep inside, that of my favorite toy trying to kill me.

The practical effects play well throughout, aside from one scene near the end where you can tell it’s a little person in costume and Chucky seems bigger than normal. But thems the breaks with practical effects, and frankly, I miss them.
