Viewing Notes

WILD WILD WEST takes what could have been a steampunk’s wet dream and implodes in a mess of jokes and rampant punnery.

The film starts out fine, with a bit of classic Will Smith swagger and I thought, “This can’t be as bad as everyone says” (I missed it due to being too busy in college). But then, about a quarter of the way through, it’s done. The puns rampage in a mile a minute and not of an enjoyable sort; every groaner you can predict is right there on the schnoz and easily plucked. And to take it straight to the bottom, the last quarter of the movie is attacked by flying plot holes (e.g., an 80 foot steaming, groaning, popping and locking metal spider somehow creeps within 50 yards of a gathering of people).

Will Smith was fine as the Fresh Prince playing James West, Kevin Kline was just annoying, and Salma Hayek was just a cardboard standup in a corset. But, I have to say, I rather enjoyed Kenneth Brannaugh and I think it’s because he was gnawing on scenery and spitting it back out.
