Viewing Notes

So. Depressing.

I remember that shocked feeling I had watching this on it’s first VHS release in the mid-90s, and some of that feeling still resonates today.

Plenty of movies and TV shows use the handheld gimmick, ad nauseum, to achieve a more realistic/documentary feel. For the most part I’m unfazed, if not annoyed by this, but in KIDS it really works. I know this is scripted, I know (at least some of) these kids are actors, but it sure as hell seems real at times. At least as real as the drugs they use.

One note about something I find especially creepy is the sound of the leather, or possibly pleather, couch as the rape happens and when the young boy is being kissed by a girl as he giggles uncomfortably. Something about that noise is unsettling and it gives me shivers each time I watch the film.

For a movie so sad and down, it does give quite a few laughs and good one-liners… “butterscotch, yo”... “my girl’s got mad flavor, heavy flow”... and that girls-vs-guys chat about sex - priceless.
