The history of the Panama Canal and its impact is depicted in five linked short films, each one dealing with a different period in the canal’s existence. Beginning with the story of a young Jamaican man and woman who fall in love in 1913 while working on the construction of the canal, Panama Canal Stories tells tales of everyday folk whose lives are affected by one of the greatest engineering feats in the world. Young Sabine lives with her aunt in the countryside of Guadeloupe. As she leaves home in her pretty dress and newly-braided hair, she has no idea that on this particular day she won’t be going to school.
