In many ways, it’s your standard biopic with all the usual tropes. But this only covers a small portion of Dylan’s career, the folk years from 1961 to 1965, when he went electric. I thought each scene was really well done, especially the musical ones: the song Dylan sings to Woody Guthrie at the beginning, and his performance of The Times They Are A-Changin’ are particularly stirring.
It’s a great cast. Timothee Chalamet and Edward Norton are really good. I didn’t really learn anything new about Dylan that I didn’t already know. I did, however, love the depictions of the supporting characters like Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, and Pete Seeger, and the re-creation of early 1960’s New York.
