Rival triad hitmen butt heads.
That’s the starting line for Johnnie To’s sensational crime drama A HERO NEVER DIES. However what follows is constantly surprising and immensely entertaining. From the *incredible* soundtrack and score to minor characters that work as well as the leads to signature To moments of abstract humor, every single frame works. The best trick it pulls is lulling one into itself as a piece of slick entertainment and then, before one even knows is, there’s a deep emotional investment. The finale is as powerful as they come.
It’s a shame there’s no quality way to watch this at home, people in Austin have had at least 3 chances to catch this on the big screen in 35mm in the past couple of years. I’ve been at all of them and I’ll show up anytime anyone wants to play this.
