Viewing Notes

Ok, so I’m revising my opinion on this film. I’ve just sat through the Director’s Edition which is on DVD only as they didn’t think to make HD effects shots to put on Blu-Ray as it didn’t exist at the time. There’s only a small handful of shots though, but this does have a different feel in certain spots than I remember. There’s still the issue where this focuses way too much on pretty visuals which are absolutely amazing especially for the time. They only added a few at the end of the film for the Director’s Edition. No the issue is the lean plot, the gross mischaracterization of the characters we’d known in the series, and the fact they spend too long even in this version panning over well built effects instead of moving things along.

My original rating for this was 2.5 stars which goes for the theatrical cut of the film. I’m raising this a full star because this was a lot better than I remember and as a sci-fi film works extremely well, but as a Star Trek film, it’s pretty weak on the characters which is the reason I watched Trek in the first place. I’ve also moved from hating the first film to being merely irritated by it, so there’s that as well.

I am harsh on this one, but there were too many mis-steps bringing this one into actual fruition and the results are too mixed. Yes it’s been awhile since we had seen these characters in new adventures, but at the same time they managed to nail these characters in every film after this even if I think the fifth film is a huge step backwards.
