Riddle me this? What does it say about your film when the best part of it is the score and the fact you got U2 and Seal to contribute songs? Not much good. I honestly can’t tell you the last time I watched this, but it was on VHS and I never bothered replacing it with a DVD or Blu-ray.

To be honest, if I rate this along with the ‘66 Batman TV show it’d rate right up there as fantastic. It has that camp and over the top feel. As a follow-up to the Burton Batman films, this is an utter disaster. Is it as bad as Batman & Robin? No, but it has some serious issues that don’t improve in the next film either. No one in this is cast well. O’Donnell is too old, especially by the dialogue. Kilmer looks great but fails as Bruce and Batman. Kidman is given nothing really interesting to do. Tommy Lee Jones is terrible as Two-Face and the neon pink make-up doesn’t help sell it. And then there’s Carey as the Riddle who is hilarious in the role, but really doesn’t work as the Batman villain.

The characters aren’t handled all that well on top of things and I’m sure the nearly 40 minutes of excised footage to make this around a 2 hour run time as well as start on an action sequence didn’t help this film at all. While this one has more in common with the two films in the series before it, this is still pretty abysmal. There’s a reason Keaton dropped out of the role here and it’s pretty evident in the final product.

I’d initially rated this at 3 stars, but after watching it dropped a half star. There’s some sparks here that I did enjoy, but it’s still a mess. If they ever restored the footage I’d probably give this another shot, but even if it pops up on Netflix again I think I’ll pass.
