Viewing Notes

Via Netflix

So this review is actually for the Redux version of the film which is about 30 to 40 minutes longer than the theatrical cut. I’d only ever seen the theatrical cut edited for television a long time back and I’m going to watch the theatrical run again right after this.

The first act of this version is tight and moves and has some great moments to it, most of them supplied by Robert Duvall’s character. The middle and last act feel like they go on overlong, are meandering, and lost me more than once. I appreciate the added footage here as I usually like director’s cuts but there are a number of extra scenes that just kill the pacing unfortunately.

So Apocalypse Now Redux gets a solid 3 from me. Sometimes you can have too much of a good thing.
