Viewing Notes

This is for the director’s cut. It’s been so long since I watched the theatrical cut I only vaguely remembered most of the events in the film. Probably the most mainstream accessible of Barker’s trilogy of films, Lord of Illusions has a pretty good cast, some great practical effects, some really ugly early cg effects that don’t work all that well when practical would have been amazing, and it has that slow familiar pacing from Hellraiser with less gore strewn throughout, but when things get nasty they go big. I do like this one, mainly for the leads who I enjoy, but this feels a little basic story wise anymore.  This is far less campy than Nightbreed and more in line with Hellraiser in terms of the way it comes across.  Of his three this is my least favorite and watching it now I do like it but I’m realizing why I never made a push to go back and pick this one up again.  I’m also realizing this is probably where I was first exposed to Famke Janssen, so that helps a lot.
