This big-screen adaptation of the legendary musical stars Gerard Butler as the disfigured, reclusive Phantom who roams beneath the Paris Opera, meddling with how its run and stalking one of the one singers there. A fairly decent adapatation of the musical.  Only a few events and some omissions and changes to the songs to make it all work, but it’s definitely still a gorgeous film not just in the way its shot but the look of the opera and the costumes as well as the Phantom’s lair. The casting choices work for the film especially since I love just about all the lead actors and actresses in this.

My only complaint is that the film version changes a lot of different emphasis on many moments and it leaves some of the scenes feeling a bit less grand than they are in the actual musical.  I realize there are differences from stage to screen, but some of these aren’t necessarily for the stage emphasis, they’re for that moment and it changes that moment on screen quite a bit.  Overall it works for the film and it’s still fantastic finally seeing the musical I saw back in the early 90s getting the large scale film treatment.
