Stranded on the desert planet Tatooine after rescuing young Queen Amidala from the impending invasion of Naboo, Jedi apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi and his Jedi Master discover nine-year-old Anakin Skywalker, a young slave unusually strong in the Force. I remember being amazed and awed with what we saw on screen when this came out in theaters. While we’d gotten a taste of Star Wars on the big screen again a few years earlier with the Special Editions, this was a whole new start to a new trilogy. It was exciting. And sixteen years later, it has not fared well. The effects mostly hold up pretty well, but like most of the prequel trilogy the cg is overused to the point it has this plastic quality everywhere you look. The script is typical to Star Wars in that it’s not great, but the acting overall doesn’t help. The choice for Anakin in this is awful, and there’s a general lack of the fun and adventure the first trilogy had. While we do get some great lightsaber fights you never really get invested with all the political machinations going on which is the driving force for the rest of the fighting in the film. There’s a reason I usually skip this one and haven’t watched it in four years or so. It just feels so disconnected from the rest of the series.
