Viewing Notes

Set in the future, the story follows a young soldier named Johnny Rico and his exploits in the Mobile Infantry. Rico’s military career progresses from recruit to non-commissioned officer and finally to officer against the backdrop of an interstellar war between mankind and an arachnoid species known as “the Bugs”. While not all that faithful an adaptation to the book, Starship Troopers manages to hit the tone of the book and hit on a lot of the themes, while still managing to hammer in a somewhat usable love triangle. We don’t get the actual Mobile Infantry suits from the book, but the aliens are diverse and nasty and everything I wanted from the bugs in the book. I hadn’t actually read the book before I saw the film and I will say if you’ve read the book there’s a lot that will disappoint you with this, but I love Verhoven and this just worked for me.
