Excellent 80’s type slasher film!
In 2006 Adam Green brought us Hatchet and Victor Crowley. The story of a deformed boy who was loved by his father (Kane Hodder). While away on an errand a group of young men set the house that Victor is in on fire, when his father returns he uses a hatchet to cut down the door strikes Victor in the head while the house burns around them. The story takes place in the Louisiana bayou where Victor has come back to life terrorizing anyone who enters his swamp. All Victor wants is revenge on the boys who caused his death.
Currently the biggest buzz about this movie is it’s rating, or in the case, lack of rating. According to the director Adam Green at the Q&A after the presentation this is the first time a movie has received such a wide release after turning down MPAA ratings and going it alone in over 20 years. It’s pretty ballsy and rightfully so, there was no reason for the NC-17 they wanted to put on the movie, which seemed like a solid R rating to me.
There was such a clamor for Hatchet II at Fantastic Fest that a second screen was opened on Sunday night. As festival goers entered the theater we were greeted with a volunteer who held a giant box of buttons that say “SUPPORT UNRATED HORROR ADAM GREEN’S HATCHET II OCTOBER 1ST.” If you live in one of these markets (New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Detroit, Seattle, Cincinnati, Columbus, Miami, Milwaukee, New Orleans, Atlanta, Charlotte, Jacksonville, Baltimore, St. Louis, Orlando, Tallahassee and Tampa) and are looking for a good slasher film this is the one for you.
The film releases in major markets on October 1st at AMC Theaters.
PS: After the Q&A I was in the ladies room and the heroine Danielle Harris from Hatchet II was talking with several fans about how draining filming was on the Hatchet II set. Although she said it was a great experience the physicality was the hardest part of the movie making experience.
