Science Fiction

Overview

Disguised as an educational film. Stereo purports to be a report on the “Canadian Academy of Erotic Inquiry’s” experiments to induce telepathy in eight experimental subjects. It follows the effects of the experiment using the theoretical framework of the parapsychologist Luther Stringfellow. The film is virtually silent except for commentary by the experimenters.

Viewing Notes

Stereo is Cronenberg’s first flick. It’s nice to see where he comes from but this mostly silent flick with dialog prattling on about psychics that never meshes with what is being shown is pure tedium. You can tell his early interest in psychic phenomenon and eroticism, which are both mentioned in it’s narration, but I never really made any connection between the scholastic banter and the shots of the students on the campus, supposedly an organization working on a project.

This is something only die hard Cronenberg fans should watch and even then, I can almost guarantee you’ll wish you never bothered.
