Viewing Notes

I originally hated The Thin Red Line.  When I first watched it back in 1998, I thought it was a total bore and would rather watch Saving Private Ryan.  Which, to a 20-year-old, I guess seems about right.

Now, 10 years later, I’ve been able to revisit Terrence Malick’s vision of WWII with The Thin Red Line on a stunning Criterion Blu Ray. Watching this film in HD was breathtaking.  The cinematography is divine and the insight into war and how it affects the human condition is far more compelling than anything in Saving Private Ryan.

In fact, I feel like The Thin Red Line is a better window into what war is like than Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers or The Pacific. My only gripe with the movie is the numerous cameos of miscast Hollywood stars like John Travolta. Can we edit him out?
