I’ve been wanting to re-watch Outland for some time, so it was nice to see it on Amazon Prime for free. Not a great movie, but definitely decent, with amazing miniature work and great sets that give you a great sense of the claustrophobia of being stationed in a mining colony on Jupiter’s moon, Io.
The story is more of a classic western, straightforward and not very inventive. Connery does a decent job in the title role, but most of the other characters are pretty perfunctory. The other exception is Frances Sternhagen as Dr. Lazarus.
Definitely worth a watch if you haven’t seen it before or haven’t seen it in a long time. Directed by Peter Hyams who has had a long and interesting career directing a wide range of movies (including 2010, Narrow Margin and Time Cop to name a few).
