Viewing Notes

A remake of the seminal classic Hara-Kiri, gorgeously shot by Miike. Movies like this and 13 Assassins always take me by surprise coming from Miike because they stand in stark contrast to some of his crazier, over the top work.

I don’t like everything he’s done but he has directed some of my favorite movies, including Audition, which still makes me shudder just thinking about it.

If you’ve seen Hara-Kiri, there’s nothing new here in terms of plot. However the color palette, deep shadows and slow, gorgeous cinematography make it well worth a watch. Just be aware that it’s a drama and not an action movie.
