I can’t help but wonder what this movie would’ve looked like in cinemascope; it really cries out for a wider angle. Still, it’s an absolutely gorgeous film.
The actors chew through their lines and the scenery with wild abandon, especially Walter Huston who looks like he had a lot of fun making this film (his last as he died shortly after). I’ve never been a big Barbara Stanwyck fan but she does a great job here too, her character’s steely, quiet determination in the second half offsetting her overconfident boldness in the second half.
