Viewing Notes

I’ve only ever seen the original Universal Soldier, and that was years ago, so I wasn’t sure what to expect from this sequel. I just rented it on a whim from RedBox, not expecting much except a by-the-numbers sci-fi/action movie.

Wow, was I wrong! This movie is amazing: it felt like a cross of Enter The Void, The Shining and Apocalypse Now. The low key music keeps the whole affair dark and sinister and the violence is brutal and realistic.

Easily one of the best movies I’ve seen in the past few years, made better by the fact that I had no expectations of this film being anything other than an average direct-to-video release.
