After watching the fantastic Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, I had to go back and watch Regeneration. Regeneration is a more straightforward story but shares the low-key, dark, menacing tone of Reckoning.
These are not your typical action movies filled with the typical action cliches. They’re surreal, well-shot, and the violence is stark and brutal. It’s criminal that they seem to have gone relatively unnoticed by general audiences.
I still find myself comparing Hyams’ two Universal Soldier movies to Panos Cosmatos’ Beyond The Black Rainbow. Though completely different movies, they share a certain tone and similarly dark, brooding soundtracks.
I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more work by John Hyams.
