Overview

Inside a darkened house looms a column of TVs littered with VHS tapes, a pagan shrine to forgotten analog gods. The screens crackle and pop endlessly with monochrome vistas of static white noise permeating the brain and fogging concentration. But you must fight the urge to relax: this is no mere movie night. Those obsolete spools contain more than just magnetic tape. They are imprinted with the very soul of evil.

Viewing Notes

My fifth and final film for the first full day of the Stanley Film Festival was also one I was highly anticipating. I really enjoyed the first V/H/S and had heard that the sequel anthology was even better. This was a midnight showing with Director Simon Barrett and Producer Roxanne Benjamin present to introduce the film and do a Q&A afterwards.

V/H/S/2 is shorter than the first (thankfully, as that was one of my complaints about V/H/S) with four segments plus the wraparound for a total of five short films. The wraparound is easily the weakest portion of the anthology and during the Q&A if felt like Barrett, who directed it, more or less admitted it by saying they might even eliminate the wraparound from a third installment.

Of the other segments: Clinical Trials by Adam Wingard; A Ride in the Park by Gregg Hale and Eduardo Sanchez; Safe Haven by Gareth Evans and Timo Tjahjanto; and Alien Abduction Slumber Party by Jason Eisener; the last two are definitely the best of the bunch, though all of them are good.

The absolute standout is Safe Haven though. The longest segment at 30 plus minutes, it gets increasingly, disturbingly insane!
