My thirteenth film of the festival and second of the day, Maniac was probably the one movie I knew the most about (aside from perhaps Sightseers) going into it.
The movie knows not to take itself too seriously and balances on the edge between camp and horror very nicely. Elijah Wood turns in a first rate performance, perhaps creepier because of the fact that he’s not a creepy menacing character at all!
If it hadn’t been for my friend Jay bringing it to my attention, I would have sworn the first portion of the movie was shot in New York City instead of L.A. Los Angeles really becomes a major character in the film and it’s never looked grittier and more menacing than it does in this film.
