Superman has never been my thing in terms of comic book heroes. Not that I dislike him, but I always felt kind of ambivalent towards him. I really felt the same way about the movie. I enjoyed the way the back story was laid out, the editing, and the acting, but the overall movie left me feeling pretty non-commital.
I was particularly bothered by the wholesale destruction of Metropolis and Smallville. It was explosion porn with complete disregard for human life, which goes against what Superman has always stood for. I had the same issue with Star Trek Into Darkness, but here it feels more against character.
It also reminded me of the third Gamera movie in the trilogy that came out in the ‘90s, whose opening scenes show the wanton destruction and loss of life caused by Gamera, a good kaiju, fighting a monster. He may be ‘good’ but he still causes huge amounts of human suffering, property damage and loss of life. Is that what Superman is now?
