Viewing Notes

A gorgeous film to look at, and at times has moments of greatness, but it felt choppy and overbearing a times because of the intrusive, overly explanatory voice overs and inter-titles.

I can almost always sense when a movie has been edited after completion and felt that way with The Grandmaster. Come to find out afterwards it had indeed been edited for the American release. Now I really want to see the “Chinese Cut” to get a better sense of the picture.

Somewhat surprisingly both kids really liked the film. I thought it might be a little too slow and artistic for them given that they were expecting a more straightforward martial arts film.
