Tabu is an ode to F.W. Murnau’s last film of the same name, with a similar plot. There are lots of nods to 1920’s era filmmaking here, including the aspect ratio (the traditional 1.37:1), mostly static black and white cinematography, and the second half’s silent film style.
A pretty straightforward story laid out slowly in two parts, a bit languid at time, but that allows you to study the beautiful cinematography and slow your own pace down to match that of the film’s.
This is another indie that screened as part of CU’s International Film Series that I missed. Would have loved to seen this on the big screen, sad I missed it now.
