Viewing Notes

Watching both parts back-to-back is a bit rough, not only because of the four-plus hour running time, but also because the two parts are radically different in both tone and outcome.

There are no black and white United Nations speeches scenes to act as a counterpoint to the harsh, washed out tone of the struggles in the Bolivian jungles. Soderbergh carries through the same neo-documentary camera style as the first part, but the effect is decidedly different. In part I think this is because the audience (or at least I) isn’t as familiar with Bolivia’s history, but also because the moral and political convictions get muddied and lost (as they really did). There is no good outcome to this, and because of the style chosen, there is no follow up at the end to let you know how Bolivia ended up.
