Viewing Notes

I’m torn on this and probably would like it more if I’d been in the proper mood. On the one hand, i enjoyed it’s subversion of the typical horror/thriller conventions. On the other, I was mostly annoyed by the, to a large degree, unlikeable characters. Early on I found myself hoping that everyone featured in the movie died some horrible death because I couldn’t find anyone to like enough to feel sympathetic for. The closest would have been the sister featured at the very beginning but her character was never given anywhere near enough depth to latch onto.

And yes, I do get that that’s the point, and that creating a sympathetic bond with any of the characters would undermine the point of the movie. In many ways Rabies is similar to Cabin in the Woods. In both cases, you learn not to care about any of the characters, which for me at least makes it easy to dismiss the film.

Watching Rabies did give me a greater appreciation for Big Bad Wolves though. I can definitely see the filmmakers maturing with their sophomore effort. Even though I didn’t like Big Bad Wolves as much as others, I did enjoy it, and definitely feel they’re progressing as filmmakers. It’ll be interesting to see what their third film brings.
