After the death of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, his devious son takes power and demotes Maximus, one of Rome’s most capable generals who Marcus preferred. Eventually, Maximus is forced to become a gladiator and battle to the death against other men for the amusement of paying audiences.

A movie I’d been meaning to revisit for a long time, considering I hadn’t seen it since it was first released. It’s always fun to revisit movies like these because you inevitably catch things you missed the first go-round. For instance, I never realized that Oliver Reed was in this, nor Sven Ole Thorsen (who I remember most for his role in the original Conan The Barbarian); or that David Hemmings played one of the Senators.
