My second favorite film of 2014 (only topped by Under The Skin), we took this in at a matinee at The Mayan Theater in Denver. It played upstairs on one of the two smaller screens but it was still great to see it in a historic theater and this was Gavin’s first time at The Mayan.
Clearly this is Eisenberg’s film from start to finish, and he does a great job of exuding doubt, lack of self-worth and a sense of predestined belittlement that I found myself squirming and wanting to reach into the screen and slap him silly at times. He gets plenty of help from a great supporting cast as well, including Wasikowska as the equally lonely, and plainly beautiful, Hannah.
I didn’t know until the credits rolled that this was co-written by Avi Korine, Harmony Korine’s brother.
