Viewing Notes

The opening scene, which starts with a great crane shot that swoops down through trees, had promise, but the story gets mired down during the second half, devolving into a cat and mouse game in England without much tension, and ending with a propagandistic call to action.

Joan Bennett, while beautiful as a common Londoner, has an atrocious British accent, which takes away from her otherwise great performance.

Still, it’s an interesting movie with a creative premise, even if it doesn’t fully deliver. It’s also great to see John Carradine playing a Nazi agent, and a young Roddy McDowall as a cabin boy on a tramp steamer that Pidgeon stows away on.
