Viewing Notes

I think I waited sufficiently long enough to watch this to dull the outsized clamor about how good this movie was (for the wrong reasons as it turns out) that I actually enjoyed it quite a bit.

While all the focus was on the artificial intelligence aspect of the love story, that’s really the least interesting part about it. It resonated much more deeply than that, along the familiar themes of what it means to be human, emotional intelligence, the grieving process, and of course the nature of love itself.

All of the acting was great, especially Phoenix, who continues to do impressive work; and Johansson, who was amazing at breathing life into a character whose only presence was her voice. This is the year of Johansson, who’s done two great turns this year in two very different movies. I’m really looking forward to seeing her in Ruby as well.
