We decided to follow up our Godfather: Part II theater experience with a final movie in the trilogy. Far from my favorite, I liked it better this time around, probably because of watching it so soon after the first two.
Sofia Coppola is still pretty terrible in this, but she’s not alone. A lot of the dialogue sounds stilted and wooden. I get that much of it is supposed to remind the audience of the time of Vito Corleone from the first movie, but only Pacino seems to be able to pull it off reasonably well. And even he, by this time, seems to have already headed down the overacting path. His performance in this movie pales in comparison to what he did in the first two.
One of the other things that always bugged me about this movie is that, other than being told at the very beginning, there’s really no indication that this isn’t present time. Even though it’s supposedly set in 1979, it looks and feels like 1990 in the movie. The first time I watched it, I don’t think I even realized it was set in ‘79.
