Overview

Directed by the legendary Walter Hill, this gritty, modern Western is regarded as a classic and features an all-star cast with Nick Nolte, Powers Boothe, Maria Conchita Alonso, Rip Torn, and Michael Ironside. Lean, mean Texas Ranger Jack Benteen (Nolte) locks horns with a former friend, Cash Bailey (Boothe), now a ruthless drug kingpin. Though they’re on opposite sides of the law, they share a love interest in the sensual Sarita (Alonso). When a crew of rogue soldiers descends upon the border town for an off-the-books mission, all roads lead to a bloody, to-the-death showdown, as loyalties shift and the lines between good and evil are blurred.

Viewing Notes

I’ve been trying to watch, or as in this case, re-watch Walter Hill’s films. I’d seen Extreme Prejudice a long time ago but remembered little about it. It’s weird that this movie has mostly disappeared from everyone’s memories because it’s some great straight up ‘80s macho action movie making. It feels like a western through and through, which makes sense given that Walter Hill has said all of the movies he’s directed are essentially westerns.

I love Nolte’s cold and unfathomable pissed off portrayal of his Texas Ranger character, and Rip Torn is awesome as the local sheriff and his sidekick for the first quarter of the film. I’d have loved to have seen more of Torn’s character.

A number of great character actors shows up in this as well, including Michael Ironside, William Forsythe and the great Clancy Brown for starters.

Unfortunately the DVD I got from Netflix is an old pressing and was fullscreen, which stymied some of the scenes. I’d love to track down a widescreen version of this, if it exists on media, and watch it again.
