A really well done, thoughtful sci-fi that starts out with shades of a Bladrunner world, but moves into it’s own, bolstered by the great animatronic ‘automata’ that are central to the plot. It was so refreshing to see these non-CGI robots and they obviously helped to more fully realize the world that they inhabit.
The only real blemish on this is the sub-par role filled by Dylan McDermott. Either more of his scenes were left on the editing room floor, or he just didn’t do a good job with the role. Either way, the character never seemed fully realized and played more like a flat cardboard cutout villain, which was unfortunate.
Since it played in the same slot as the secret screening, it didn’t seem like it got a lot of traction with the press, but it feels like this is a film that will get a wide release in theaters. I almost wonder if it wasn’t originally slotted to be a secret screening.
