I’d heard mixed reviews of this at Fantastic Fest so I went into it with suitably tempered expectations. The director was on hand to introduce the film and do a Q&A after, which was cool.
The opening scene didn’t do much to inspire confidence. The two brothers came off as amateurish, which immediately irritated me. However, as the film progressed, things got better and before long I was involved in the story and had forgotten the rough start.
I really enjoy this particular type of sci-fi that manages to create a world without having to resort to heavy special effects, alien worlds, etc. It definitely provoked a lot of thought, and no small amount of confusion, in the audience judging by the questions asked during the Q&A after. It’s the type of movie that rewards your patience and attention to detail as there are a lot of tiny bits scattered throughout that are easy to miss (for instance, an Escher infinite stairs print on the wall in one scene).
Certainly not my favorite of the fest, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. It’s nice that there hasn’t been a single movie yet that’s really fallen flat for me.
