A densely layered film that unfolds slowly against a bleak backdrop, both in terms of the physical environment and the moral underpinnings of the townspeople. A pretty accurate dissection of political corruption, religious power, male power (and lack thereof) and a host of other social issues confronting modern provincial Russia post-communism.
Elena Lyadova turns in a powerful performance as Lilya, Nikolay’s wife. She’s stunningly beautiful in a very earthy way and is a fulcrum for much of what happens. She instills Lilya with a quiet desperation that anyone who’s been trapped in circumstances beyond their control should easily recognize.
