Viewing Notes

Decided to try out the new Regal theater in Longmont. Turns out their new seats are pretty uncomfortable.

I thought the story and acting were excellent. My main problem was with how it was shot. You’re very aware of the camera the entire movie. Inniratu shoots this the same way he did Birdman, with long takes that sweep in and out, tracking the actors. While it worked well in Birdman, it gets in the way here. There are times the camera is so close to things the lens gets fogged by the breath of the actors or debris gets all over it. The awareness creates a barrier here that feels out of place.

Again, it worked well in Birdman because of the subject material. Here it was distracting at times.

Despite that decision, I thought the movie was great. The action was gruesome and tense, hard to watch at times. Both DiCaprio and Hardy were excellent, as was Domhnall Gleeson.
