Overview

This day-in-the-life cult comedy focuses on a group of friends working at Sully Boyar’s Car Wash in the Los Angeles ghetto. The team meets dozens of eccentric customers—including a smooth-talking preacher, a wacky cab driver and an ex-convict—while cracking politically incorrect jokes to a constant soundtrack of disco and funk. Some of the workers find romance as the day moves along, but most are just happy to get through another shift.

Viewing Notes

CAR WASH kicked off this semester’s 35mm film schedule for the International Film Series at CU Boulder. The irony of a group of (mostly older, male) white people watching a movie primarily about the black working poor of ‘70s L.A. was not lost on me. Regardless, this was a lot of fun to see in a theater on film; and the print was gorgeous.

It plays a lot like a made-for-tv movie, just a little more risque than anything that would’ve actually shown up in ‘70s-era living rooms.
