Tonia’s second pick. Man, this one really stabs you in the heart. Excellent film. It really does a great job of manipulating you and then making you complicit in some of the more heartbreaking events that happen. The obvious comparisons between the super pigs at the slaughterhouse and Nazi concentration camps was sobering. The fact that it takes an oversized CGI animal to make us care about the animals we eat says some unflattering things about humans and how we’ve commoditized our food.
That makes it sound like OKJA is gloomy and depressing throughout, which it isn’t. That stuff is nicely offset by some pretty funny scenes punctuated by great, odd performances by Swinton and Gyllenhaal especially.
