An early talkie and Hitchcock’s only “whodunnit” style crime mystery. He said he didn’t like whodunnits because they failed to build tension with the audience who are focused on figuring out the mystery instead of being emotionally connected to the protagonist.
Despite being pretty conventional, Hitchcock manages to do some interesting things both with sound and visually. The ending in particular is surprising, probably shocking at the time.
