Viewing Notes

Hitchcock’s fifth film in Hollywood, on loan to Universal, is pretty damn good. Makes great use of famous locations including the Hoover Dam, but especially the Statue of Liberty.

There’s a shot near the beginning of the film with smoke billowing out in front of an aircraft hangar door that’s amazing. Probably one of the best shots ever put to film.

While there are little snippets of Hitchcock’s trademark wry humor here and there, its fairly absent from this film. This one feels more serious, likely due to the subject matter and the timing (given that America was newly at war).
