Viewing Notes

My rating may go up upon further reflection but my first impression is this is the best movie I’ve seen all year. A beautifully lit movie using natural light to great expressive advantage. Combined with the uncomfortably close up camera work throughout most of the film, the two create a great deal of tension and unease.

I was really looking forward to Bardem but Lawrence steals the show with a brilliant performance. XXX is also great. No surprise that the best performances are from women in a movie about the creative process, muses and religion.

While the religious and creative themes seemed almost too easily laid on the surface, there was plenty of symbolism that went right over my head (the frog in the oil tank room for instance).

I also had to remind myself that what’s obvious to me may not be so to others. A woman came up to us after the movie while the credits were rolling and asked us if we understood what it was about (since she obviously didn’t) before surmising that it was something to do with a satanic cult.
