Viewing Notes

For a mostly single location hostage situation this movie is pretty great. This was John Garfield’s last film before he died an early death at the age of 39. Co-written by the blacklisted Dalton Trumbo who used a pseudonym, and co-starring a young, brilliant Shelly Winters.

Garfield is amazing in this. He plays a cornered, desperate, dumb gangster who ultimately just wants to be loved. He’s his own worst enemy however and manages to make his situation worse at almost every turn.

Winters is also equally great, and you don’t realize just how great until the final scenes. You’re never really sure if she’s suffering from Stockholm Syndrome or not throughout most of the film. She masters a series of facial expressions throughout the movie that speak volumes while still leaving you in doubt as to what her true feelings and motivations are.

And finally, the score is thrilling. It really drives the action and underscores the relentless tenseness of the plot.

On the whole this is a great hidden gem in the Kino Lorber Noir box set I bought last year on sale. Worth every penny for this movie alone.
