Viewing Notes

Apparently von Stroheim tended towards budgetary excess when directing films, which eventually led to the end of his career as a director. This was billed as the first million dollar film. This film was originally supposed to be between six and ten hours long! Universal cut the shit out of it apparently.

All the money appears to have ended up on-screen though. The sets are lavish, the location shooting is beautiful and believable, and there are enough period details and extras to completely evoke the sense of time and place in Monte Carlo.
