Viewing Notes

I should try to track down and watch the full version at some point. This film has a lot of different versions with a lot of different runtimes. The version I watched is just over an hour long and very obviously omits half the story, focusing instead on Garbo’s half.

The cinematography is heavily influenced by German Expressionism while still feeling realistic. Heavy shadows and contrasts make Vienna feel oppressive and grim. It also serves to highlight the astonishing beauty of Garbo and the great job she does in contextualizing her character’s emotional state through body language and facial expressions.

I think this may be the first Garbo film I’ve seen. Can’t wait to watch more of her work now!
