Viewing Notes

The Kino Blu-ray was well worth the purchase! I continue to be amazed by German expressionist films and F.W. Murnau in particular. FAUST is stunning in its expressionist use of light and shadow and its strong set design.

This is the third film I’ve seen featuring Emil Jannings, here as Mephisto, and he continues to impress. Gösta Ekman does a great job in a dual role as the old and young Faust. I wasn’t even sure it was the same actor while I was watching. And finally, Camilla Horn, in another dual role as both Gretchen and Marguerite, is stunning. She does a particularly great turn as Gretchen and most of the last act really belongs to her.
