In 1913, Carl is released from prison, where he served a sentence for stealing. Spurned by his circumstance, Carl rejects God and resumes his fast life of crime. Before long, his fate intersects with that of Mary, a devout orphan, prompting a romance and a reevaluation.

Viewing Notes
A bit overwrought at times but nonetheless a pretty good drama centered on circus performers before, during and after the first World War. Directed by the guy who did HAXAN. He seems to have a thing for devils as he plays the devil who acts as a kind of puppeteer, manipulating humans. But God prevails, hallelujah!
Norma Shearer is pretty good in this as the lead.
