Viewing Notes

Oddly, IMDB lists this as a crime and film noir, which it certainly isn’t. It is a gorgeously shot humanist drama centered on two lower class nobodies. The cinematography, set design and lighting are top notch and it’s easy to see this must’ve had a great influence on ‘30s era talkies going forward. Just the great dolly work alone is notable.

Hard to believe but this is my first von Sternberg film!
